C-TPAT Certification is a supply chain security program that was introduced as a result of the 911 terrorist attacks. C-TPAT stands for “Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism”.  The U.S. government realized that cargo being imported into the united states was vulnerable to having weapons of mass destruction hidden inside containers. They also realized that screening every container was virtually impossible. So they developed a partnership program with industry.  Companies that become certified in the program enjoy certain benefits for their participation.

C-TPAT Certification is a voluntary program administered by U.S. Customs & Border Protection. Eligible companies include: U.S. Importers, U.S. Exporters, NVOCCs (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers—also called Consolidators or International Freight Forwarders), Cross-Border Highway Carriers, Ocean Shipping Lines, Airlines, Rail Carriers, U.S. Ports & Terminals, U.S. Customs Brokers, Mexican & Canadian Highway Carriers, Mexican & Canadian Manufacturers.
